Trying out Linux

My Linux past
over the past few years i have wanted to try and use Linux, the first time was i bout a retail box of Mandrake Linux i installed it on a spare computer and i got most of it working, but at the time i still had dial-up internet and i could not get the win-modem to function so with no internet i really couldn't use it full time.

a year or so later i bought a retail box of red-hat it was suppose to have good winmodem compatibility and it did actually work with my modem so with the internet and most of the GNU programs i could do 90% of what my computer usually does, Except play games.

now in late '07 i started to see a lot more linux around with the EEEPC from Asus the $200 walmart computer i again wanted to see if linux could replace windows even if only on a spare machine.

Ubuntu Gusty Gibbon

i downloaded the Ubuntu 7.10 iso at about 700meg it is just one CD but i have a bunch of DVD-RW i never use so i decided to burn it to one of those and if i ended up not liking linux again then i could erase the thing and not be out a 25cent disc =}

i have Virtual PC running on my windows computer so i decided to try and install on that first and see if there is any setup mistake i can get out of the way on the Virtual machine before wasting time on my spare comupter i will install linux on later.

Virtual PC sucks

I tried installing it on VirtualPC but every time it booted it would go into a weird screen resolution and look all striped and distorted i tried booting with safe VGA and telling linux use 800x600 but ever time i got to the GUI it would try its stupid resolution again. i tried install some other linux distoros just to see if it was Ubuntu. i tries Damn small linux it did the same thing and i tried gOS and it did the same thing so i gave up on the whole virtual Linux install, for a little while.

Enter VMWare

after a less then stellar experience with Virtual PC i was watching a podcast called ITidiots and they where using VMware after "slagging off" on Virtual PC and saying how much better VMware is i deside to download a trial of it and see.

VMWare differences

at first it seem very similar to VPC the boot screen of the VMware actually seems less advanced but it is just cosmetic as the bios is nearly the same. i boot the Ubuntu in live CD mode and all the virtual device like sound and ethernet where configured correctly so that was a good start. after a few minutes playing with firefox and trying some setting like screen res and open office i clicked on the install icon and went through that wizard and it was all pretty straight forward after about 45 minutes it was all installed and asking to be rebooted i removed the ISO from the virtual CD drive and let the VM boot form the hard drive it booted much fast then with the live cd and i got to the login screen entered my login info i was at the Ubuntu desktop the auto update program connected to the internet and said there where some 200 updates available i left that alone for now and decided to try and run thru a typical day of computing and i would see if i could use this day to day.

thats all for now. I will try and post more on this when i have used linux for little longer.

Most of this post was made inside linux.
